Douglas Hofmann Receives Young Innovator in the Materials Science of Additive Manufacturing Award

Douglas Hofmann, Visiting Associate in Applied Physics and Materials Science, has been named by the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) as the recipient of the 2019 "Young Innovator in the Materials Science of Additive Manufacturing Award." Alireza Marandi Named 2019 KNI-Wheatley Scholar

Best Paper Award

Postdoctoral Scholar Carlos M. Portela, working with Professor Julia Greer and Dennis Kochmann, has won the Gold Paper Award. The title of the paper is "Supersonic Impact on Carbon Nano-architected Materials". The award was granted to the best student contribution across all topic areas at the Society of Engineering Science (SES) 56th Technical Meeting.

Professor Marandi Wins AFOSR Young Investigator Award

Professor Alireza Marandi, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, has won a 2019 Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Award. The objectives of this program are: to foster creative basic research in science and engineering, enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators, and increase opportunities for the young investigators to recognize the Air Force mission and the related challenges in science and engineering. Professor Marandi received the award for his proposal entitled, "Simulton Frequency Combs: Quadratic Solitons for Generation of Few-Cycle Pulses in the Mid- and Long-Wave Infrared."  [AFOSR Press Release]

Professor Julia R. Greer Named Director of the Kavli Nanoscience Institute

Julia R. Greer, Ruben F. and Donna Mettler Professor of Materials Science, Mechanics and Medical Engineering, has been named the Fletcher Jones Foundation Director of the Kavli Nanoscience Institute (KNI). Greer replaces professors Oskar Painter and Nai-Chang Yeh, who served together as co-directors. "I am delighted to begin spearheading the wonderful enterprise of the KNI, humbly following the footsteps of my predecessors, professors Painter and Yeh. I have been a KNI member and on the board of directors since shortly after I arrived at Caltech," Greer says. [Caltech story]

Professor Marandi Receives Okawa Research Grant

Alireza Marandi, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, is a recipient of a 2019 Okawa Foundation Research Grant for his research project entitled "Non-Von Neumann Computing Using Nonlinear Photonics". Professor Bernardi Receives Emerging Young Investigator Award

Marco Bernardi, Assistant Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science, was a recipient of the Emerging Young Investigator Award at the 4th Functional Oxide Thin Films for Advanced Energy and Information Technology Conference. Professor Bernardi also gave an invited talk entitled “Advances in Computing Charge Carrier Dynamics in Oxides From First Principles.”

Austin Minnich is a Recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award

Austin Minnich, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Physics is a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. This is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Harel Dor Receives 2019 Henry Ford II Scholar Award

Applied physics student Harel Dor, advised by Professor Oskar Painter, is a recipient of the 2019 Henry Ford II Scholar Award. This summer he is going to work on navigational software for the upcoming Mars Science Helicopter, which will enable scientific exploration of Mars environments previously thought inaccessible at unprecedented speeds. The Henry Ford II Scholar Award is funded under an endowment provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund. The award is made annually to engineering students with the best academic record at the end of the third year of undergraduate study.

Professor Atwater Receives IEEE Cherry Award

Harry A. Atwater, Jr., Howard Hughes Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science; Director, Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, has received the 2019 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) William Cherry Award. Professor Atwater was recognized for his "many and outstanding contributions to photovoltaic science and technology.” The award recognizes those who have devoted a part of their professional life to the advancement of the science and technology of photovoltaic energy conversion.
